The word was invented in 1967 by the\u00a0Greek<\/a>\u00a0city planner\u00a0Constantinos Doxiadis<\/a>\u00a0to represent the idea that in the future urban areas and\u00a0megalopolises<\/a>\u00a0would eventually fuse and there would be a single continuous worldwide city as a progression from the current\u00a0urbanization<\/a>,\u00a0population growth<\/a>,\u00a0transport<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0human networks<\/a>.[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0This concept was already current in science fiction in 1942, with\u00a0Trantor<\/a>\u00a0in the Foundation series.[citation needed<\/span><\/a><\/i>]<\/sup>\u00a0When made public, Doxiadis’ idea of ecumenopolis seemed “close to science fiction”, but today is “suprisingly pertinent” according to geography researchers Pavle Stamenovic, Dunja Predic & Davor Eres[1]<\/a><\/sup>, especially as a consequence of\u00a0Globalisation<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Europeanisation<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
